Transhipment ports of the world.

There are about 16 transshipment ports in the world and their list is provided below as per their capacity or quantity of work carried out by them.

A transshipment port is a place where generally containers loaded / discharged from the mother vessel to the feeder vessel or feeder vessel to the mother vessel.

Why transshipments are taking place at the transshipment port?

Example an import consignment is coming from Australia to Chennai via sea. The entire consignment on the ex-vessel is not bound to Chennai it will be to different destinations. So the containers to different destinations will be consolidated at a transshipment port like Singapore. The containers coming from different ports to Chennai will be consolidated and will be brought in a feeder vessel.

Some times the mother vessel cannot come to the discharge port due to poor Draught.

Name of the port & Country.
1) Singapore, Singapore.
2) Hong Kong, Hong Kong.
3) Shangai, China.
4) Kaohsiung, Taiwan.
5) Busan, South Korea.
6) Tanjung Pelepas, Malaysia.
7) Rotterdam, The Netherlands.
8) Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
9) Gioia Tauro, Italy.
10)Algeciras, Spain.
11)Hamburg, Germany.
12)Salalah, Oman. (Earlier all Maersk containers used to get
transshipped at this port in Asia.
13)Port Kelang, Malaysia.
14)Colombo, Sri Lanka.
15)Port Authority of Jamica, Jamica.
16)Antwerp, Belgium. (The specialty of Antwerp port is there are
about 1000 berths)

Govt of India is planning to setup a transshipment port in India near Vizhinjam 16 kms away from Tiruvanathapuram .

The specialties of this port.

Natural port.

This is a all weather port and the international shipping line is just 1 nautical mile off Vizhinjam coast.

The port is endowed with natural Draught of 24 M. In fact the Draught of ports like New York, Southampton, Singapore, Dubai, Colombo, Hong Kong is only 15 M. Where Dredging is required for this port. Since the Draught of our port is 24 M no dredging required. The port authorities will be spending lot of money on dredging initially and annually for maintaining the same standard.

The port can accommodate vessels of Panamax Class and Futuristic Vessels.

Earlier stats says the container movement in 12 Indian Ports is 4.1 Million TEU (Twenty Equivalent Unit) and only Vizhinjam Port can handle 4.6 Million TEU.

Very eagerly waiting for the first Transshipment port in India.
